Forest officer Mike Casserley measuring Stephen's Stone also known as The Hoarstone, in Ringwood Forest near Verwood, Dorset. It is an ancient sandstone menhir, a Neolithic standing stone. It was recorded in 1280 as a boundary stone for Cranborne Chase called the Hoarstone and is near an Iron age barrow. In 1994 it had recently been rediscovered by forestry workers after many years lying hidden by undergrowth and is now a scheduled ancient monument. It is believed it might once have been used to chart the heavens. 11 April 1994 Picture by Roger Bamber
