Essex. 1916. A photograph of the British First World War, Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force pilot, Lieutenant Wulstan Joseph Tempest, DSO, MC (1891 – 1966). On 1 October 1916, when flying a night fighter biplane of No. 39 (Home Defence) Squadron, based at RFC North Weald in Essex, Tempest shot down the German Zeppelin airship The zeppelin, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Heinrich Mathy, was on a bombing raid over London and after dropping bombs over Cheshunt, Tempest intercepted the airship and attacked it using incendiary bullets, causing it to crash in flames at Potters Bar.
