Ismail I (1487-1524), Shah of Persia. Also called Sophy I, Ismail unified what is now Iran, ruling from 1501 to 1524, establishing the Safavid Persian dynasty. Ismail wrote poetry in both Azerbaijani and Persian, and was also of Pontic Greek descent. He was described as having reddish-blond hair. This woodcut portrait is from 'Cosmographie universelle' (1575) by the French explorer and writer Andre Thevet (1516-1590). This book described the history and geography of the lands in which Thevet had travelled. The two volumes and four tomes contain over 1000 pages divided into 23 books. This portrait is from chapter XVI of book IX.
