On the road from Pozieres to Bapaume stand a water tower with a fresco of an Australian soldier (digger) to commemorate the 23,000 Australian soldiers that fought and died during the Battle of Pozieres. Below the fresco are the names of the men who were awarded the Victoria Cross during the fighting in the area. There are five Australians, one Canadian and one Brit.
