ROUNDING AND BACKING MACHINE (CROWLEY).The production of letterpress books by machine hadits beginning with the invention of the rounding andbacking machine. The laborious hand or roller backing. was thus eliminated. After the backs of the books havebeen glued up as described under Rounding, the booksare fed into the machine between a pair of rollers, theback resting against the guides, which must be accuratelyset. The upper roller descends on the book, the guidesrise up out of the way, and the rollers rotate sufficiently ROUNDING AND BACKING 107 to round the back and advance the book between a pair ofjaws which clamp it firmly and bring it in contact withan oscillating concave form.
