Lateron, in 1836, Messrs. Donahoe and Devereaux estab-lished the Pilot, which after more than half a centuryof existence, is still the great exponent of Catholicdoctrines in New England. By Mr. Donahoes exer-tions the Pilot was made an extraordinary success, andso it remained up to the disastrous fire of 1872, whenMr. Donahoes splendid building and i)rinting materials. PATRICK DONAHOE were destroyed a second time, resulting in a loss to himof §300,000. Soon after he was burned out a thirdtime. The panic followed, and the friends who hadloaned him money were compelled, reluctantly, to with-draw their assistance from him. But with sublime faithin the goodness of Providence, he placed his propertyat the disposal of his creditors, although it had so depre-ciated in value that it did not realize anything near itsproper value. Archbishop Williams and John Boyle OReilly, however,purchased the entireplant of the Pilot,between them, andMr. Donahoescreditors were paidoff in yearly instal-ments. The nationalfame of the Pilotwas maintained, andits circulationincreased, under theeditorship of thelamented OReilly,until, on his death, itonce more passedinto the hands ofthe man who hadfounded it, and isto-day conducted byhim wi
