An old engraving of a wire rope way, wire-way or aerial tramway in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. Here a British system, ‘Haven’s automatic wire-rope railway’, uses a portable steam engine (centre) to power the crane, but the cableway itself uses elevation/gravity to move the cargo from a barge. Empty buckets are loaded with coal from the ship’s hold. A worker on an elevated platform guides the full bucket from the crane and to transfer its rollers onto the sloping cable down to the coal dump (right). The empty buckets slide back down to the dockside.

An old engraving of a wire rope way, wire-way or aerial tramway in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Here a British system, ‘Haven’s automatic wire-rope railway’, uses a portable steam engine (centre) to power the crane part of the system, but the cableway itself uses elevation and gravity to move the cargo from ships and barges. Empty buckets are loaded with coal from the vessel’s hold. A worker on an elevated platform guides the full bucket from the hoist crane up to a position to enable him to transfer its rollers onto the sloping cable down to be unloaded on the coal dump (right). The empty buckets slide back down to the dockside. Horse-drawn wagons arrive to take the coal away. Cable transport systems vary – they may be driven or passive, and items may be moved by pulling, sliding. The use of pulleys and balancing of loads moving up and down are common. American inventor Peter Cooper is an early pioneer of the system, constructing an aerial tramway using wire rope in Baltimore 1832, to move landfill materials. In 1853 he built a two-mile-long aerial tramway to transport iron ore to his blast furnaces at Ringwood, New Jersey, USA.
