Human genital development, illustration. During the first six weeks of pregnancy and development of the embryo and foetus in the womb, the human genitals are the same (top). Differentiation occurs from this point onwards, as they develop into the female (left) and male (right) genitals respectively. This differentiation is due to the presence of an X or Y chromosome, and the presence or absence of male and female sex hormones.
