Light micrograph of a vertical section through the wall of the gallbladder. At the top of the image is the mucosal layer, with abundant folds formed by an axis of lamina propria coated with a simple columnar epithelium. Under the mucosa is the muscular layer, formed by smooth muscle cells arranged in bundles. The outer layer, in the lower half of the gallbladder, is lined by peritoneum. This sample belongs to the upper half, where the gallbladder is attached to the Glisson capsule. In this case, the outer layer is an adventitia, since it lacks peritoneal mesothelial lining. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
