The more extensiveof the two is situated at the base of the tragus; the second isfarther inward, while a third is occasionally met with bevondthis. These fissures ren-der the cartilaginousmeatus more freely mov-able, and are importantclinically, for throughthem deep abscesses ofthe parotid gland, dis-charging spontaneously,rupture into the canalon account of the weak-ness of the walls at thispoint. From a surgicalstandpoint these dehis-cences are important,since they enable us toturn the auricle and fibrocartilaginous canal forward on thecheek, after separation of the posterior, inferior, and superiorattachments.
