Memorial Plaque of those lost when the Destroyer USS Chauncey sank on 19th November 1917 off Gibraltar
USS Chauncey was steaming to escort duty when on the 19th November 1917 at 110 miles west of Gibraltar she was rammed by the British merchantman SS Rose as both ships struggled to maintain position in a war-imposed blackout. Seventy men were rescued by the Rose and 21 died. She was a Bainbridge-class destroyer or 'Torpedo boat destroyer' launched in October 1901.
