Fittingly, the sun rises above Lake Michigan and beyond the Doane Observatory at Chicago's Adler Planetarium. The Doane Observatory houses a large aperture telescope that can gather over 5,000 times more light than the human eye and is used to view planetary bodies. The Adler Planetarium was established in 1930 and was America's first planetarium. The planetarium is historically and scientifically significant. It is both listed on the US National Register of Historic Places and also is a US National Historic Landmark. It is part of Chicago's Museum Campus.
