Artwork of an In-Orbit Validation (IOV) satellite for the Galileo satellite navigation network. The Galileo satellites, being built and launched by the European Union and the European Space Agency, will form part of a network of 30 satellites orbiting the Earth. This network will be used for car, train and aircraft guidance, rescue services, and road use taxation. It is scheduled to begin operating by 2014. There are four IOV satellites, with the first two scheduled for launch on 20 October 2011. This artwork shows a fully deployed IOV, with solar arrays providing power.
