Water-based sport and leisure is a highly-popular and fast-growing activity for locals and tourists alike. Many areas of water that were previously closed to visitors are being increasingly made available for a wide variety of purposes. SW France has the good fortune to possess many large rivers in beautiful countryside settings that are relatively shallow and gentle during the summer months. This makes them safe venues and ideal for regular and occasional sport and recreation uses. In the winter months, however, the same gentle rivers can quickly turn into swollen and fast flowing torrents, or overflow their banks, as they attempt to discharge the region's heavy rainfall from their catchment areas into the sea.
