ThirdS tort THE LIBRARY. The library, the gift of the friends, graduates, and stu-dents of the college, was begun in April, 1903, and completedin February, 1907. It is built of gray stone in the JacobeanGothic style of architecture of the period of 1630, and formsthree sides of a closed quadrangle. The main building, devotedto the library proper, faces east and is opposite and parallel toTaylor Hall at a distance of about fifty yards; the principalentrances of the two buildings face each other and are connectedby a broad cement path. The east front is one hundred andseventy-four feet long and contains a three-story stack withaccommodation for eighty-eight thousand volumes, and abovethis a large reading-room with desks for one hundred and thirty-six readers, each screened to a height of two feet, as in the BritishMuseum reading-room, to secure privacy to the reader.
