Monumento as Bandeirantes (Monument to the Bandeiras or Monument to the Flags) on Av. Pedro Alvares Cabral next to Parque do Ibirapuera (Ibirapuera Park) in Sao Paulo, Brazil The monument is a large-scale granite sculpture produced by the Italian-Brazilian sculptor Victor Brecheret. It was commissioned by the government of Sao Paulo in 1921 and completed in 1954 It commemorates the 17th-century bandeiras, on the slave trade involving African and local tribes and gold hunting expeditions into the Brazilian interior. Brazil had the largest intake of 4, African slaves – 40% more than either the US or the Caribbean. Brazil was the last country to abolish slavery.
