A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot (thrombus) that develops in a deep vein, usually in the leg. This can happen if the vein is damaged or if the flow of blood slows down or stops. This clot may interfere with circulation, and it may break off and travel through the blood stream (embolise). A resulting embolus can lodge in the brain, lungs, heart, or other area, causing severe damage to that organ. Symptoms of a DVT include leg pain, tenderness, swelling (oedema), increased warmth, and changes in skin colour of one leg only.
