April 7, 1894. wire gauze, which is first wound into rolls, andthen shaped into brush form under heavy press-ure. They are smooth, and are claimed to giveexcellent contact. LEGAL NOTISS. PORTABLE THOMSON RECORDING WATT-METER FOR STREET CAR TESTING. It is frequently necessary in electric street rail-way practice to test the cower consumption of thecars, and heretofore the General Electric Companyhas furnished a voltmeter reading to 500 voltsmounted rigidly within a mahogany box for thispurpose. This was, however, found not to bewithout faults some of which were referred toin the last Issue in an article by W. NelsonSmith. The mechanism being rigidly mounted, the meier was subjected to violent jars whichfrequently Interfered with its accuracy, shortenedits life and rendered it unsatisfactory. Experi-ments have been going on for sometime past tosolve a satisfactory portable recording meter for. POBTABIiB WATTMETER. the purpose named, and the General ElectricCompany now announces one which according to-the statements made will satisfy the require-ments of street railway service. The meter in question consists of a Thomsonrecording meter mounted on a skeleton metalframe, and having a capacity of 35 amperes volts. It is mounted within a polished woodcarrying case about two-thirds the size of theformer type. Instead of being rigidly mountedin the case the meter is suspended between twonetworks of interlaced rubber cord, cr, as it were, between two rubber hammocks. This method ofsuspension is claimed to preserve the meter fromviolent agUation or shocks, and render its accu-racy reliable. It is the first time that this systemhas been applied to the recording meter. Themeter may be used placed upon the floor of thecar with absolute safety and convenience and issaid to give perfectly accurate readings. This portable meter, is normally rated at 25am
