A sign indicating that the building it is fixed to was once owned and administered by the UK Government's Ministry of Works.

This sign is fixed to Lanercost Priory in Northumbria and indicates that the building was once owned and administered by The Ministry of Works. The Ministry was set up in 1943 during WW2 to requisition property for wartime use. After the war it retained responsibility for Government building projects. In 1962 it became The Ministry of Public Building and Works and in 1970 changed its name again to The Department of the Environment. Today most historic places in England, previously administered by the Ministry of Works are looked after by English Heritage. English Hertitage are now responsible for many of the historically most important sites in England.
