The left arm and shoulder are elevated to bear the tray, hishead sinks upon his chest, his right arm and right leg areextended, to enable him to keep his balance. His bald headis crowned with a garland of leaves and berries, his loinsare encircled with a cloth, and on his feet he wears snake that begins to coil round his arm helps to supportthe tray. The whole figure has so much nature and characterthat we have transferred it to our |lillWII!P«HM|illhi|WlWllllli Narcissus. Other small and graceful statues in the same material arethe Narcissus, the Hermaphrodite Apollo, Fortune on aglobe, the group of Bacchus and Ampelus, &c. The attitudeof Narcissus, and the earnest expression of his face, as helistens for the voice of Echo, are admirably rendered. It isconsidered one of the finest works yet discovered at annexed plate will convey an idea of it. POMPEIAN AllT. 299 Pompeii has yielded but few marble statues of any note;but some of those discovered confirm the opinion that theancients sometimes coloured their statues. Thus a statue ofVenus leaving the bath, naked from the waist upwards, andwringing her dishevelled locks, discovered February 16th,1765, has the hair painted yellow, round her neck is a giltnecklace, the breasts and upper part of the stomach are alsogilt, whilst the drapery which covers the lower members ispainted blue.* On the same day was discovered
