Mars, Mars Express image

Mosaic Mars Express image of the surface of Mars. The blue areas are basaltic sand, which blows across Mars' surface forming dune fields. Just below centre are the Valles Marineris (Mariner Valleys), a massive system of canyons near the equator. The canyons are many hundreds of kilometres long and several kilometres deep in places, dwarfing similar canyons on Earth. Data obtained by the High-Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on Mars Express. The European Space Agency's Mars Express has been orbiting Mars since December 2003.
