Samuel Beck .. ..82 9 8 1913Hastings. A Minister. Samuel Beck, the son of Thomas andSusannah Beck, was born in London, February23rd, 1830. In 1858 he married Ellen Rowland Bisshopp,who proved a true helpmeet to him and a devotedmother to their children until her decease in1888. He commenced business at Saffron Walden,but removed to Dorking, where he was the meansof starting a Working Mens Institute, and wherehe also held for a time on Sunday evenings, aseries of Meetings for Tramps, at which tea wassupplied. These gatherings were so much appre-ciated that he was requested to discontinue themas they attracted more tramps to the town thanthe local authorities were able to cope Samuel Beck 9\MDEL BECK 5 In 1872 Samuel Beck left Dorking and wentto reside in the United Slates of America, stayingthere for nearly eight years. Here he travelledin the ministry and paid many visits to he had onee more taken up his abode inEngland he weni to America on three successiveoccasions under a deep spiritual concern for thesmall Meetings, and for the continuance anddeepening of family worship. It was Samuel Becks conviction that it washis particular work in life to start a mission andleave the work for others to continue, and thetruth of this can be testified to in the varioustowns where he resided, on all of which sometrace remains of the hand that planted and thatleft it to others to gather the fruit of his labours.
