He was the sonof David \V. Spaid. of MiddleburK. and his wife,. Sarah. His father was a soldier in the Civil Waiand was discharged in 1863 and died in 1864 fromsickness contracted from over-work and exertionwhile serving his country. His mother after-wards was married to Lewis Helfrich, (o whomone daughter was born, Jennie, now married toA. M. Aurand. Mrs. Helfrich died September10, moo, aged 64 years and 12 days. Mr. Speidwas married in 1883 to Miss Sue M. Smith, ofnear Beavertown, Pa., and started housekeepingin Beaver Springs. He was employed in the ironore mines of this place until 1886, when he movedto Mifeiinburg and secured employment in EnochMillers planing mill and was engaged with until the spring of 1880, at which time hemoved back again to Beaver Springs. Shortlyafter that he was engaged with Cofrode & Evans,of Pottsville, engineers and contractors, and wassent to Johnstown directly after the flood to helpbuild a railroad bridge across the Conemaughriver: from
