Carding machines. Row of carding machines at a textiles processing factory circa 1900. Carding is a technique used to disentangle, clean, and mix fibres such as cotton or wool. Manual carding was a laborious process, and the invention of carding machines in the 18th century speeded up the process. By the beginning of the 20th century, a wide variety of designs were in use. These machines are in use at the Jefferson Mill, Manchester, New Hampshire, USA. This photograph is part of the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS).
