Astronaut Judith A Resnick (right), photographed at the time of her selection as a Space Shuttle mission specialist in 1978. She is seen here having just completed a familiarisation flight in a T-38 jet trainer, flown by NASA pilot Richard Laidley. Resnick made her first space flight in the Shuttle programme on Mission 41-D of 30 August to 4 September 1984, becoming the second American woman in space. Her career came to a tragic end on 28 January 1986, when she and her six fellow astronauts on Mission 51-L were killed in the Challenger disaster.
