The Supermarine Spiteful was a Second World War, British fighter aircraft designed as a successor to the Spitfire for the RAF. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Griffon engine, it had a radical new wing design to allow safe operations at higher speeds and incorporating inwards-retracting undercarriage. Although ready for production as the war was ending, it showed only marginal improvements over existing types and was being overtaken by jet-powered designs and only 19 were built.
