Sudan/South Sudan: 'Emin Pasha greets Henry Morton Stanley, Kavalli, Lake Nyanza (Lake Victoria), 29 April 1888'. Lithograph from 'The Story of Africa and its Explorers' by Robert Brown (1842-1895), 1892. The Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, led by Henry Morton Stanley, was undertaken to rescue Mehmed Emin Pasha, governor of Equatoria, by going up the Congo River and then through the Ituri Forest. It was an extraordinarily difficult route that resulted in the loss of two-thirds of the expedition, though it was eventually successful and Emin was rescued from the revolt of Muhammad Ahmad.
