Cw 8659 156401 5T34 and 156452 2F44 at Rufford Two trains in the station at Rufford on Saturday The normal train service along this line is a single unit train running from Preston to Ormskirk so it is unusual to see a train on both platforms here at Rufford. This day was the third day of the Grand National horse racing event in Aintree near Liverpool so Northern, the train operator of this line has put on some extra trains. The line from Preston to Ormskirk connects at Ormskirk with the Merseyrail train service from Ormskirk to Liverpool Central which serves Aintree station, the station for the race course. The train on the left, unit 156 401 has been to Ormskirk and is returning towards Preston as an empty stock movement leaving Ormskirk at and has been waiting for unit 156 4152 to arrive from Preston with the normal service to Ormskirk. 156 401 was running under headcode or train reporting no 5T34 and 156452 was running under headcode or train reporting no 2F34. Rufford is the only place on the branch line that is double track for a short distance through the station, forming a passing loop where trains from either direction can pass each other. This track now is a single line branch with a single passing loop at Rufford, where the driver of this train is collecting the single line token to allow him to safely travel back towards Preston having returned from Ormskirk. The line runs between Preston and Ormskirk and at one time was a mainline route from Liverpool to Scotland.
