Snowy path up Cader Idris. In the top right background is Fox's Path, one of the more interesting and challenging walks.

On the way up the Pony Path towards the saddle. In the background is the Fox's Path - top right 30degree (ish) slope covered in bright white snow. This popular mountain is accessible by most walkers. The popular tourist path, or pony path (also know as the saddle) is the most straightforward route. It has just one short steep section of zig-zag to gain the shoulder of the mountain. Once up on the 'saddle' the summit is a gentle (weather dependent) walk. To the top and back might take a good walker some five hours. Most walkers approach the mountain from the north, or Dolgellau side, and leave their car at the Ty Nant car park. There is space for about 25 - 30 cars in the main car park and a field is used for any overflow. Cost of parking is £4 (2013) for the day, cash only. The Gwernan Lake Hotel is just less than a half a mile away and maybe, just maybe, the owner might let you leave your car in the Hotel car park. This gives access to the Foxes path ascent, which is a little more rigorous and needs care and some experience of walking in the mountains. The Minffordd path from the south is also very popular and passes Llyn Cau, one of the most scenic corrie lakes in the UK. Cader Idris is well served by Rangers who do a great job ensuring the safety of users of this magical mountain. As always when walking in the hills and mountains take heed of the weather and wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Make sure you also have a map and compass. Finally, always take food, always take water and have some emergency equipment with you - whistle, light, emergency bivvy bag, mobile phone.
