Currants and Gooseberries should be planted on good soil, which must be kept rich and well worked. Few fruits will so thoroughly repay good and proper treatment. Trim out the old wood as soon as it begins to decline^and shorten all the young shoots, to keep the bushes in good shape. Sprinkle ashes around the roots occasionally, to keep the borers away. The currant worm may be de- stroyed by sprinkling the bushes with powdered white hellebore while they are wet with dew. This powder is poisonous, and, where it has been applied, the fruit should not be used without first being washed. Black Xaples. Vigorous and productive; used for jelly and jams, and highly profitable for market in some sections. 2 years, $ per doz. ; $ per 100. Cherry. Fruit large, bunch small; deep red; acid. 2 years (very fine), $ per doz.; $ per 100. Fay's Prolific. Too much can scarcely be said in favor of this most valuable fruit. Color rich red ; as com- pared with the Cherry currant, Fay's Prolific is equal in size, better in flavor', contains less acid, and rive times as prolific; and from its long, peculiar stem, less expensive to pick. 1 year, 20 cts. each ; $ per doz. 2 years, 25^ cts. each : $ per doz. Versaillaise. A popular, old variety; bunches
