Calf muscle. Computer artwork of an oblique posterior view of one of the muscles (red) of the calf and its tendons (white) and attachments to the bones of the leg and foot. This is the flexor digitorum longus muscle, which originates from the rear of the tibia (shin bone) and ends in a tendon that passes over the inner side of the ankle and then splits into four tendons, one to each of the four smaller toes. This calf muscle is used to flex (bend) the toes. The two bones of the lower leg are the tibia and fibula. Both legs show the knee cartilage, while the view at left includes some of the ligaments (white) of the knee and ankle joints.
