Southwold pier has had a fair share of mishaps through the began on Southwold Pier in 1899 and was completed in was at that time 810ft in 1934 the T head was swept away during a particularly violent storm and never the last war a floating sea mine blew away another section of the pier. The pier was again repaired in 1948 however, in 1955 yet another storm took away most of the structure. Another storm in 1979 saw the length reduced by a further 1999 the pier was restored by the new owner of the Iredale family some 100 years after the first wooden pile for the original pier had been driven. The new-look pier was officially opened by the Duke of Gloucester in 2001 and in 2002 the became the first ship to pull alongside its landing stage. Finally in 2005 the pier was sold to a new owner Stephen Bournes, a man whose passion for the wonderful construction continues to make it one of the Suffolk coast's most cherished attractions.
