Powered by a black hole with a mass two billion times that of the Sun, this quasar was the most distant yet found at the time of its discovery in June 2011. The light from this object has travelled for 13 billion years to reach Earth, meaning that this quasar is being observed as it was just 770 million years after the origin of the universe in the Big Bang. The disc of gas and dust around the quasar (red and orange) has been heated by its gravity, producing a very high luminosity. A jet of radiation (white) is emerging from the quasar. It is located in the constellation of Leo.
