Cw 5057 Lifting tail gate off boat in Appley Lock. In November and December 2017 the Canal and River Trust are replacing the gates on Appley Bridge lock on the Leeds and Liverpool canal in West Lancashire. Here the new tail gates for the lock are being lifted for the work boat that has transported them down the canal to the worksite. A “spider crane” has been installed on a temporary bridge constructed over the lock to lift the gates up from the bottom of this deep lock. At 12 feet deep this is one of the deepest locks on the system. Both sets of the steel gates are being replaced with new wooden ones constructed from oak.
