Between the Great Trochanters (Fig. 209).—This diameter is the greatestdistance between the external surfaces of the great trochanters of the normal conditions it measures inches (31 cm.), but may even be ii^ 164 PHYSIOLOGICAL inches ( cm.), without indicating pelvic contraction. Because of variationsin the size of the femoral head, this diameter is the most unreliable one of those here mentioned. 4. The External Con-,,: jugate; Baudelocques Di- n; i ameter( and 207). —This is measured fromthe depression just belowthe spine of the last lum-bar vertebra, which isabout one inch above theposterior interspinous di-ameter, to the point onthe skin of the mons ven-eris in front of the upperexternal edge of the sym-physis pubis. In normalcases it measures 8 inches( cm.). As a clinicalindex of contracted pelvisthis diameter is to Jewett, how-ever, when the externalconjugate is at or below 6inches ( cm.), or evenbelow 6^ inches ( cm.),the pelvis is invariablycontracted; between 6^inches ( cm.) and 8inches ( cm.) the amount of contraction is very uncertain, and must besettled by internal measurements; at or above 8 inches ( cm.) the pelvis isalmost sure to hav
