In 1843he was appointed auditor-general of the state, butheld the position only a few weeks, when he wasappointed one of the judges ofthe supreme court. In 1845 hewas elected governor of Michiganby the democrats. In 1847 hewas elected U. S. senator, and re-signed as governor March 4,1847,when his senatorial term com-menced. He served six years asU. S. senator and was four yearschairman of the committee onpublic lands. In 1853 he wasmade president of the commis-sion appointed to adjust the Span-ish and Mexican land claims inCalifornia. In 1856 he returnedto Ann Arbor and engaged oncemore in his law practice. Hehas since been twice the dem-ocratic nominee for judge ofthe supreme court and once forgovernor.
