At 4 A. M. the skirmishing began andwas kept up all day. Wagners brigadecame forward just above the north end ofthe Ridge. The Twenty-third Corpsmoved forward still farther to the left,drove the enemys skirmishers into theirworks east ot Rocky Face, and demon-strated against the works so stronglyas to hold the forces of the enemy inposition during the day. McCooks cavalry division stillfartlier to the east, at Varnels Station and vicinity, met asuperior force of the enemys cavalry, supported by twobrigades of infantry, and was w^orsted, hut managed to holdthe gaps leading to Schofields rear. McCooks losses for theday were nine officers and 130 men. Colonel LaGrange,one of the brigade commanders, was severely wounded andcaptured. Late in the afternoon Newton was ordered to attackthe works on the eastern slop
