, Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia, Dinslaken - Renaturation of the Emscher. New Emscher discharge into the Rhine. In the background, the disused STEAG coal-fired power plant at Voerde. The Emscher's outlet into the Rhine has been relocated from Dinslaken to Voerde, almost 500 metres to the north. Fish can now swim barrier-free up the new Emscher from the Rhine through a newly created floodplain. The Emscher has been completely free of sewage since January 2022 following the construction of a parallel sewer. The river was previously an open, above-ground combined sewer with rainwater and wastewater.
