The Bradford brace, if properly adjusted, holds the limb inabdnction and indirectly splints the joint. It is therefore themost efficient of the short traction The long traction brace adds the element of splinting in which Fig. Taylors median abduction brace used as a bed splint to overcome adduction bycounterpressure upon the sound side. the short braces are deficient and it is therefore far more satis-factory in the treatment of the acute or destructive types of cases. * Shaffer and Lovett, New York Medical Journal. March 2, 1878. OBTHOPEDIC SUBGEET. 379 The Thomas brace is a direct splint and iixes the joint more-perfectly than other braces, but it does not prevent adductionnor does it provide traction, v^hich, in connection with crutches, may be an important adjunct in treatment. Plaster supports enable one to dispense with the services of amechanic, a great advantage in many instances. The long spicawith traction in recumbency is the most satisfactory treatmentfor acute disease. The long spica including the foot is of servicein the treatment of young children in out-patient practice. The short spica is efficient in selected cases in proportion tothe accuracy of its adjustment. The vexed question is that
