Two airmen guarding the Malvinas/Falklands War Memorial, with an image of the Falkland Islands, Plaza San Martin, Buenos Aires

700 Argentinians died in the 1982 Falklands War with Great Britain. This Vietnam-style memorial to the Argentine war dead stands at the bottom of the hill below Plaza San Martin, in the background of the view. Stark, black plaques, with lists of white names, commemorate the names of the Argentinians who died and stone plaques with carved emblems the main towns and cities of Argentina, from which the dead came. An Eternal Flame burns over a metallic image of the islands (out of shot to the right). Argentina's Army, Navy and Air Force each guard the monument in 2-week rotations. Here we see two airmen on guard.
