NORTH AND SOUTH CAROLINA. 79 ed that the settlement upon the Chowan was outside of thenorthern boundary of the province: a new grant was thereforegiven, by which the limits of Carolina were extended fromVirginia to the middle of III. A second settlement was made in Xorth Carolina, pre-vious to the grant to Clarendon and otlicrs, by a band of NewEngland adventurers. This was near Wilmington ; but as it didnot prosper it was soon abandoned. In 1665 a company ofplanters, from Barbadoes, founded a permanent settlement notfar from the site of the former one near Wilmington, whichwas afterwards called The Clarendon County Colony. IV.
