Ratu Lala had fully a dozen large fishafter his bait, and some he hooked for a fewseconds. This only made him the keener, andafter leaving the calm Somo-somo Channel, al-though we encountered a very rough sea, he hadthe sail hoisted and we travelled at a great ratein and out amongst a lot of rocky islets, shippingany amount of water which soaked us and our * w g S-5; H IN DARE-DEVIL MOOD 31 baggage, and half-filled the boat. I expected weshould be swamped every moment, and from thefrightened looks of our crew I knew they expectedthe same thing. Hence, I was not reassuredwhen Ratu Lala remarked that it was in just sucha sea, and in the same place, that he lost hisschooner (which the government had given him)and that on that occasion he and aU his crewremained in the water for five hours. WhenI explained that I had no wish to be upset, hesaid, I suppose you can swim ? I said Yes !but I do not wish to lose my gun and otherproperty, to which he replied, Well, I lost morethan that when my schooner went down. I wastherefore not a little relieved when he had the saillowered. He explained that he never liked beingbeaten, even if he drowned us all, and all thiswas because I had bet him one shilling (by his owndesire) that he would not get a fish.
