London, England, United Kingdom. Traitors' Gate along the River Thames at the Tower of London.

Traitors' Gate along the River Thames at the Tower of London. Traitor's Gate was used as an entrance where many prisoners, including Sir Thomas More, entered the Tower of London. In its early years beginning in the 16th century, prisoners were brought by barge along the Thames, passing under London Bridge, where the heads of recently executed prisoners were often displayed on pikes. White Tower within the Tower of London dates from 1078 when the castle was built by William the Conqueror. It has served as royal residence and for many of its years also as a prison (as late as 1952). Its historic impact is highly significant as London grew up around it. The general layout established in the 13th century largely remains.
