Waimangu Volcanic Valley is the only hydro thermal system in the world wholly created as the direct result of a volcanic eruption - the Tarawera Eruption of 10 June 1886. It is the home of Frying Pan Lake, the World's largest Hot Water Spring in terms of surface area.
