For some years he was superintendentof the Slater cotton mills in Providence (serving atthe same time as major-general of the Rhode Islandmilitia), and then for a considerable period was_ en-gaged in the construction of cotton mills in variousparts of the country. In 1849 he returned to RhodeIsland and built the Atlantic delaine mill at Olney-ville. From 1851 until 1857, as a whig, he repre-sented Rhode in the U. S. senate. Afterleaving the senate he gave his chief attention toperfecting a rifle-cannon and a projectile, uponwhich he had been engaged for many years, anddied from injuries received wliile prosecuting his ex-periments. Though his early educational opportuni-ties had been limited, he was a man of varied accom-plishments and a frequent contributor to magazinesand periodicals, among which was a series of paperson the culture and manufacture of cotton in thesouth.
