Litter on grass in front of Inner Berlin Wall (Hinterlandmauer) with blue and red graffiti scrawl, Mauerpark, Berlin, Germany

The inner wall of the Berlin Wall border zone was that seen by the citizens of East Berlin. This surviving 30 m section of the inner wall at Mauerpark is legally used by graffiti artists practising their art. The wall is at the top of a grassy slope which was part of the border death zone. The floodlights in the background are part of the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Sportpark, which opened in 1952 and became the home of the Dynamo Berlin Football Team. The inner wall here was built higher than usual to deter would-be escapees from the stadium. Mauerpark attracts many people on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
