Caption: Shigatze, TAR, China - Jul 2001. Devoted pilgrims file past a massive Buddhist thanka displayed during the 'Buddha Unfolding Festival' at Tashilumpho Monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lama in Shigatze, Tibet. Once one of the biggest and most influental monasteries in Tibet, being the home to the second most reincarnated monk, Tashilumpho was sacked during the 1950's with Chinese occupation. Although since regaining its original function as a scholarly institution, the Chinese still have the monastery tightly under the thumb.
