View E of Holy Cross church looking down from Foel y Mwnt headland, Cardigan; Wales; UK. Built C13th-C14th on the site of the cell of a Celtic saint on one of the pilgrimage routes from SW Wales to Bardsey Island in NW Wales. A pilgrim halt before embarking from the cove below, also used as a mortuary chapel for those wishing to be buried on Bardsey. In 1155 the bay was the site of a battle when native Welsh repelled an invasion of Flemings; it is said the Welsh played football on the summit using the heads of the defeated sea-raiders. A National Trust property.
