Burnham, to repre-sent his town at this celebra-tion :— Mayors Office, Haverhill, 15, 1890. To THE Chairman of the LocalBoard, Haverhill, :— In the year 1640, Rev. JohnWard, born in Haverhill, England,penetrated with a small band offollowers into what was then awilderness, and formed a little set-tlement on the banks of the Merri-mac River, in what is now EssexCounty, Massachusetts. In honorof their devout pastor they namedthe settlement Haverhill for hishome in England. . This year, on the second andthird of July, we propose to havea celebration of the quarter-millen-nial anniversary of the settlementof our city, and recognizing the tiesthat bind us to your own ancienttown, and feeling that it would.
