Opposite to it onthe north is a low arched recess looking like the reararch of another doorway, but much too low, andshowing no signs of having been ever cut through tothe outer face of the wall. The walls are allplastered within and without, and strengthened withmodern brick buttresses. The roof is covered with tiles. At the west end isa small wooden turret containing one bell which isinscribed, this bell new cast & enlarged 1729 BY IANE DEANE WIDOW OF THO. DIANE ESQ., the initials being those of John Cor of Freefolk : The Old Church from the Rectory Garden Across the nave near the west end is a wooden1 5th-century screen with cinquefoiled and traceriedlights and a moulded cornice. It has been spoilt asfar as appearance goes by a thick coat of paint, andwas no doubt once used to separate the chancel fromthe nave. The interior was beautified in 1703,and a cornice of this date remains, together withseven gilt wooden candles and candlesticks, whichdoubtless ornamented an altarpiece. On the north wall are traces of mediaeval colour, and it is evident that a great deal of painted decora-tion is hidden behind the plaster, and might be withcare uncovered. During a restoration some vaults containing bodiesin lead shells were found beneath the chancel floor, but they have since been filled up. The emptywooden coffins in which the lead shells were formerlyinclosed were found in the space between the woodfloor and the vaults. The plate consists of a silver tan
